The pipe track walk makes things easier as it goes around it. It is an ideal tour and a family-friendly way to discover Table Mountain. It is designed for all fitness levels
The track offers a tireless hike, as the terrain is not the steepest and strenuous. It is an easy walking route, that begins with a single rock path and which later merges into a jeep track. The walk will start at the Kloof Nek and Tafelberg road junction.
The pipe track is one of the oldest hiking routes all the way to the top, which dates back to 1887. It was made to run below a series of ranges, which are popularly called as the twelve apostles.
It was built to bring water from the Disa George, the back of the Table Mountain to the Molteno reservoir in Oranjezicht.
It runs through the Woodheat tunnel and Slangolie ravine. Today it transports water from the top of the Table Mountain to the reservoirs of the Cape Town city. The route is parallel to the huge water pipes running under the western slopes.
One of the most prized views for hikers along the track is the 12 Apostles Mountain range. The pipe track looks over the Atlantic Ocean, lion's head track and camps bay.
The track offers numerous exceptional views including the massive sandstones cliffs and ravines of the western slope.
The hike will end exactly from where we started.
Warm clothing is suggested. The weather is very unpredictable, it can change very quickly on Table Mountain, cloud often rises up out of nowhere and the wind picks up to reach gale-force speeds.
Any day could be the right or wrong time. However, during mid-summer, the pipe track walk receives a lot of sunlight throughout the day. It is better to hike either in the early mornings or evening during summers.
The route is also jam-packed with the unique flora of the Table Mountain including fybnos and many South African proteas. The Cape Floral Kingdom is one of only six floral kingdoms in the world and is geographically by far the smallest, yet the richest, most diverse of these plant kingdoms. It is widely recognised as one of the most special places for plants in the world in terms of the number of endemic species. Fynbos (fine bush), the indigenous mountain vegetation, forms a major part of this Cape floral kingdom.
You will enjoy sundowners from an elevated position on the mountainside, watching the sun sink below the horizon of the Atlantic Ocean,
