Cape Town Hiking History

Hoerikwaggo Before Formal Trails

Long before marked hiking routes existed, the mountain landscape around Cape Town was already known and used by the Khoi and San peoples.

SANParks notes that Table Mountain was known as Hoerikwaggo, meaning “Mountain in the Sea,” and that the mountain range carries both natural and cultural history.

Fresh Water, Settlement, and Early Routes

When the Dutch East India Company established Cape Town in 1652, access to fresh water helped shape the location of the settlement near Table Bay.

Over time, the mountain slopes became important not only as a dramatic landscape, but also as a source of water, movement routes, and lookout points above the growing town.

Defence, Landmarks, and Mountain Access

After the first British occupation of the Cape in 1795, defensive structures were extended onto the mountain slopes. South African History Online notes that King’s Blockhouse formed part of a defensive line guarding the land approach to Cape Town and Table Bay. Historic landmarks like this remain part of the broader mountain-walking experience today.

Kirstenbosch, Conservation, and Walking Culture

In 1913, Kirstenbosch was formally established, strengthening the mountain’s link to botanical conservation and public access.

SANBI records that the Kirstenbosch estate was handed over to its trustees on 1 July 1913, marking the beginning of one of the world’s best-known botanical gardens.

Cape Town Hiking Today

Today, Cape Town’s mountain routes range from iconic summit hikes to gentler scenic walks and botanical experiences. SANParks describes Table Mountain National Park as a walking park with routes for everyone from the super-fit to the casual stroller, which fits the range of private hikes and walks offered across Table Mountain, Lion’s Head, the slopes, and Kirstenbosch.
