Despite its reputation as one of the most perilous places to hike in South Africa, the mountain's irresistible draw continues to attract near and far hikers. So, what exactly fuels this magnetic appeal? Let's delve deeper and explore what makes Table Mountain a must-visit destination for those who crave an adrenaline rush.

1. Majestic Natural Beauty:

Table Mountain's unique and awe-inspiring beauty is undoubtedly one of its primary attractions. With its flat tabletop summit, towering cliffs, and surrounding vistas that offer panoramic views of Cape Town and the Atlantic Ocean, the mountain showcases the mesmerizing fusion of land and sea. However, it is important to note that minimizing the inherent dangers of Table Mountain requires adequate preparation, including expert guidance and knowledge of changing weather conditions. Safety should always be prioritized, and hikers must respect the inherent risks involved to enjoy this majestic natural wonder responsibly.

Overview

Table Mountain has more than its fair share of accidents and fatalities, particularly on its west side.

This is not a problem with hiking itself; it's a problem with some hikers who don't follow safety rules, or who are unprepared for the challenges they face on Table Mountain.

People just don't like to give up on the mountains, with this inquisitive approach facing danger, people planned and plotted their next adventure.

The mountain’s attraction as a hiking destination is also, I believe, responsible for many of the problems it encounters - which are mostly related to poor preparation.

The reason so many people hike it is because it is such a beautiful, awe-inspiring and easily accessible natural wonder.

Don’t be fooled into thinking you can “wing it”. Plan ahead and be sure you take all the necessary safety precautions, especially in the [summer](https://www.capetownetc.com/cape-town/table-mountain-hiking/). Being on Table Mountain during a hot summer day is not much different to sitting on the sun-facing side of your car all day with the windows up and engine off. This can have fatal consequences if you aren’t adequately prepared.

Don't treat Table Mountain lightly; respect it for what it is and don't approach your hike with a lack of preparation or planning.

Here are some things I've learned to avoid from years of hiking Table Mountain:

1) Always check the weather forecast before you start your hike, especially if you're planning to climb up or down from Tafelberg Road or Plattekloop Gorge. You can get caught out by a sudden storm or rain shower at any time of year on Table Mountain – even in winter!

2) Make sure your boots are comfortable before you start hiking Table Mountain – especially if you're planning to do long hikes over several days on rugged terrain like Plattekloop Gorge (which takes about three hours return). Your feet will thank you for it later! If your boots aren't comfortable enough for walking around town, they won't be

3) Don't take shortcuts across any part of Table Mountain (or any other mountain). Always stick to official trails as far as possible –

4)If you're hiking with children or inexperienced hikers who don't know how far they can go, take turns carrying their backpacks so that everyone gets an equal share of the weight. This will also save their energy for when they get tired later on in the hike.

Carry a first aid kit and know how to use it before heading out on your hike – even if nothing goes wrong while

5)It is important that you respect this mountain, its ecosystem and other users when hiking on it. Don’t take shortcuts across any part of Table Mountain (or any other mountain). Always stick to official trails as far as possible – only use alternative routes if necessary. Avoid disturbing vegetation and animals in their natural habitat and never leave litter behind.

Choose a good time to go hiking

Table Mountain is a beautiful mountain and hiking it is always a pleasure, but the best time to hike it depends on your preferences.

There are two seasons for hiking Table Mountain: summer (October to March) and winter (May to September). Summer is much hotter than winter so avoid going up during this period unless you enjoy sweating profusely in the heat! Winter days are cooler but nights are very cold so it may be too cold for some people. You will find more information about the weather on this website under “Weather” .

If you are looking for a scenic hike then the best time to hike Table Mountain is during autumn and spring when there are fewer people on the mountain.

If you like hiking in winter then this is also a good time to hike as there are fewer people on the mountain, however you will need to be prepared for cold weather.

You can also hike Table Mountain in summer but it tends to be busy and hot so you will need plenty of water with you.
